Faré Upu is an authentic beachfront cottage for families getaways. Set in the heart of the gorgeous Opunohu bay in Moorea Island in French Polynesia. It offers a spectacular view on the lagoon, the mountains and the sail boats or world-class cruise ships anchoring in the bay where historically Captain Cook first arrived back in 1769.

The Opunohu bay has been used for its beautiful scenery by numerous movies such as "La Bounty" in 1983, featuring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, "A love affair" in1993, with Warren Beatty, and "Les faussaires" in 1994, featuring Gérard Jugnot and Jean-Marc Barr.

This beachfront rental sits on a large planted land borded by coconut trees and a white sand beach. Its spacious covered terrace permits to enjoy the open air polynesian way of living.

The holiday property offers one main house and one independent bungalow.

The main house has 2 bedrooms, featuring one double bed and two single beds. These 2 bedrooms are both opening to the garden, at the back and on the side of the house.

The main house also offers a half bathroom with a shower and the kitchen and the living room opening onto the covered terrace.

The independant bungalow has its own half bathroom with shower and is right on the beach with spectular views on pineapple plantations and the sea.

Good value in an expensive location

We were pleased with Fare Upu during our recent visit. Like the previous reviewer we were concerned about the lack of reviews, however the rental was a better deal than some of the others in the immediate area. While the furnishings are somewhat dated, the setting is beyond spectacular. The snorkeling right out front is quite good, and the kayaks were fun to paddle around. We shopped at the Champion upon arrival, so cooked almost all of our own meals. Some of the cookware could benefit from replacement, but all in all we found the kitchen adequate for our needs. We found the microwave operation to be a bit sporadic, but the stove worked great. It was nice to find salt, pepper, oil, coffee and a few other things in the house. Like the previous reviewer, we found the layout to be a bit strange. This is in part due to the fact that the two bedrooms actually within the immediate house area are locked out for the owners. Two guest bedrooms are accessed via the outside veranda as is the bathroom. There is a small powder room in the main house which was handy. And the little cabin has an ensuite bathroom. There are a lot of different keys for the house, but we mostly just worried about this for the bedrooms as the house really didnt lock up anyway. The lock on the kitchen door was broken, so the house was always open. However with the security gate, everything felt very safe. We had problems with the hot water so notified the management company who ordered a replacement tank that same day. We also had problems with the electrical several times, for example the circuit breaker for the washing machine would pop if you used the overhead lights at the same time. But this is an older property that is showing its wear a bit. It would have been helpful to have instructions on how to operate the washing machine and change the stoves propane tank, but we figured it out. We experienced almost no bugs, but were still glad for the mosquito nets on the beds since there are no screens on the windows and doors. We used the fan a couple of times, but found the weather to be perfect. Sitting on that lovely lanai was paradise, although the chaise lounge smelled strongly of animal urine. I laid there once and didnt make that mistake again. All of the other lanai furniture was very comfortable and we spent almost all of our time out here. And yes, the wifi is really terrible, but adequate for basic contact with friends and family. I would not want to try to work remotely here if I depended on the internet. We had no trouble finding the place with the detailed direction provided by the management company. They were good to work with, and I would go here again! With a few updates to the house, they could charge a lot more!

Fantastic stay... in a year or two
Posted on: 7/18/2017
We went out on a limb and booked this property that had no reviews because it was being managed by Tahiti Homes, a reputable rental company. Emily, the manager, is very quick to respond via email and made sure all our needs were met prior to arrival. She even offered to perk up our stay by offering stocked groceries, champagne, and an in-house massage. The house has 3 bedrooms, one of which contains two twin beds. One of the bedrooms is located in its own separate bungalow. Inside the bungalow is a shower, sink, and bed with a free standing wardrobe. The bungalow has sliding glass doors that open up to Oponohu Bay. In the main house, there is a large living room and well-stocked kitchen for your cooking needs. There is one bathroom with a rock shower and one bathroom with just a toilet. The layout of the house is strange and got increasingly irritating as the week went on. Only the living room and kitchen connect with a doorway. To get to the bedrooms or bathrooms, one must exit the house, walk around the deck, and unlock the door to each bedroom which are located on the outside of the house. All room doors are located on the house's perimeter. More irritatingly, each room has its own key. Leaving the property? Ok, don't forget to lock all outside doors and collect all 8 keys. I'm not sure if all fares are this way... The beds are not the softest. Toward the end of the week, we dreaded going to bed because we new we would wake up achy. There is wifi, but it is TERRIBLE. When it works it is too slow to do anything. I had a tough enough time loading up my email. There are no ceiling fans. The house provided two floor fans, but these just aren't enough. Most nights we sacrificed safety by sleeping with all doors and windows open trying to get a breeze. The kitchen had all the cookware we needed. It even had grocery bags to take shopping. We did not stop at any of the shops nearby. We drove to the big Champion on the east side of the island and loaded up. The worst part about the house is that there is no sign. This makes it difficult to find. Not only for us, but for businesses and tour providers as well. We drove past it a few times upon arrival. Additionally, two tour providers failed to pick us up during the week due to not being able to find us. I believe this is the tour provider's fault, but as every other fare has a sign, it would be most beneficial for this fare to get one on the gate. On a similar note, you MUST have a car. Until they get some signage on the gate at least. We had a car only one day and relied on restaurants/businesses to pick us up and that did not go well. Every time we mentioned where we were staying, a local would say, "Upu? You mean [some other fare]?" No... Toward the end of the week, we just started telling everyone we were staying at the Fare Viahere, which is two doors down. They know where that one is! The great thing about the fare is the open air deck that looks out over Oponohu Bay. We enjoyed many nights lounging on the chaise on the deck watching the sunset. Unfortunately, the Paul Gaugin cruise ship docked there for 3 days of our week (Thurs-Sat), which blocked our lovely view of paradise. But hey, I'm on Moorea, I'll be ok. There are lots of rocks and corals in front (behind?) of the fare. This can make going out in the provided kayaks a little treacherous, so do so only when the water is calm. Snorkeling right in front was marvelous! Loads of fishies and we even saw 2 sea turtles and 2 reef sharks. Snorkeling was comparable to the Hilton. I left behind a raft from home that I hope can be used by the next patrons! Mosquitoes are there, but few. I got four bites all week. We did have a plug-in oil mosquito deflector, so maybe that helped. The coils are absolutely prohibited, although this would have been nice with all the time we spent on the deck (where I got the bites). Thankfully, mosquito nets are provided over the beds. There are many geckos that seem to come out arou
